A very wide range of projects have received Trust support over the years. Recent awards have included further support for the Seafood Scotland Seafood in Schools project, a contribution towards the new St Abbs Lifeboat initiative and funding towards Scottish White Fish Producers’ Association (SWFPA) member vessels undergoing Seafish Responsible Fishing Scheme audits.
In 2015, funding was approved for several heritage projects including a Clyde Fishermen’s Association (CFA) commissioned fisheries documentary, the 125 Memorial Association sculpture at Eyemouth and the Invercairn Community Council memorial statue.
A range of gear selectivity trials have been supported by the Trust, including projects led by SWFPA and Mallaig and North West Fishermen’s Association (MNWFA). An award to the industry led and Scottish Government supported Gear Innovation and Technology Advisory Group (GITAG) was made in 2015.
A number of marine science and fisheries certification projects have also benefited from Trust funding including grant support for the Scottish Pelagic Fishermen’s Association (SPFA) Pelagic Scientific Support project and lobster v-notching schemes run by Orkney Fisheries Association (OFA) and the Shetland Shellfish Management Organisation (SSMO).
There continues to be good demand for qualifying training courses, including from active fishermen upgrading their non-mandatory certification. The Trust has also supported NAFC Marine Centre graduate placements and the training of fishermen on the FishSAFE unit as well as providing bursary support for Masters Students through an arrangement with the University of Aberdeen.
Grants continue to be made available for the enhancement of stability records for fishing vessels involved in guard vessel work and a substantial award was made in 2013 to the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation (SFF) Personal Floatation Device initiative, also generously supported by the Scottish Government, European Fisheries Fund and U.K. Fisheries Offshore Oil and Gas Legacy Trust Fund.
